Naughty Boys Need Love Too

So here's a thought, do you have to be animated to be a cartoony Villain or Super Villain? I thought and thought and thought and decided heck no! So here are some live action Villains who I think bridge that gap between reality and the world of cartoons.

Rita Repulsa, The Power Rangers (original series)
I love this lady. She's probably my all-time-favorite live action cartoony Super Villain. I love her technique: send a monster that has no chance of blending in (and will most definitely get the Power Rangers' attention on the double), then when it fails to crush the do-gooders make it grow to Godzilla-like proportions and let it battle the Megazord until it fails to crush them again. Rinse. Repeat.

The Goblin King, Labarynth
Gosh, that's none other than David Bowie! For all you kiddies out there he's actually a rocker of the highest order (ground control to Major Tom, anyone?). Anyone willing to prance around in sparkley clothing, makeup, a wig, and sing about monsters and stuff...wait, I just described his whole career. You know, up until recently I always thought he did that cool crystal ball juggling thing himself, but as a helpful fellow named Razaar informed me recently, it was actually a man by the name of Michael Moschen. Silly me, I totally believed the urban legend that claimed Bowie went to mime school to learn how to do that trick. Oh I'm so gullible.

Hans Gruber, Die Hard
Can you talk about villains without talking about Hans? I considered including another of Alan Rickman's roles as Robin Hood's Sherrif of Nottingham but if I'm only going to include one villain per cartoon, I can only truly include one villainous role per actor, right? Hans Gruber is the most scrum-diddley-umptious of all live-action Villains. If you don't know what I'm talking about you obviously haven't seen the film. Go rent it, then you'll understand.

The Joker, Batman the movie
Yeah, Jaaaaack Nicholson. This sets an interesting precident: the Joker is in the Hall of Fame, The Live Action Gallery, and he has a quote on the Home Page. I think that proves his superiority as a Super Villain to end all Super Villainry.

Wait, wait. Okay, remember this?

"Where does he get such wonderful toys?"

Yeah, that's a great line.

Faith and Philo, Strange Days

I know neither of them ended up being the one with the true Super Villainous plans and the denoument at the end but come on, by the time the movie got to "reveal" scene the plot had completely fallen to bits. But this is a great film aside from that and considering their roles as the betrayers and the yucky people I thought they needed a place here. Interesting trivia, the dude playing Philo also played Alan Rickman's sidekick in Robin Hood. And you can find Alan Rickman on this very page of the Live Action Gallery. Those two scamps, always playing the bad guys.

The Penguin, Batman Returns
Personally I like the cartoon Penguin better since he's just a wee bit more whimsical but I was impressed with Danny Devito's role as the yucky birdman. He's got the plans, he's got the gadgets, he's got the evil mojo workin'. So here he is, in live-action form. Doesn't he just gross you out?

Richter, Total Recall
I know he's really truly the sidekick in this movie but the Super Villain bossman Mr. Cohagen just ain't that great. Richter gets better lines, better action, and he's the instigator of his own evil acts. He even tunes his boss out when he doesn't feel like playing along. He's a villain in this role with aspirations for climbing the ladder of success.

"Give ze people air!" --Dennis Quaid

Darth Vader, Star Wars (original trilogy)
Duh.

And you thought I wouldn't include him. Let's face it, he's the live-action Lex Luthor. He's the standard on which all other Evil is based. And no, I won't include Boba Fett. All you fans can just admit to yourself that he's just a cronie who gets whacked after a grand total of about two minutes of screen time. (And i do not accept the "...but in the book..." justification. Get over it, I don't care. Can you tell I've been arguing this for far too long?)

aside: ever noticed how buffed and shiny his helmet is by the third film?

Kaiser Soze (Szze), The Usual Suspects the movie
He is The Man when it comes to Super Villainry. His galactic-sized ego and his awe-inspiring planning skills place him up at the top. I would say if The Joker is the ultimate cartoon Super Villain, the Kaiser is the ultimate live-action Super Villain.

Simon Gruber, Die Hard With A Vengeance
I'm a weenie sometimes... I forgot his name for like, I don't know, a year! Thanks to a spunky little MSU alumni I've got it all straightened out. Hello?? The whole premise of the movie was based on Simon Says!!!! Pardon me while I pound my head against the table. Anyway, he's got the super plan, the henchmen, and the double-cross down to a science. He was supposed to be Hans Gruber's brother in this movie, and his villainous abilities did not discrace Hans's memory.

Dr. Evil, Austin Powers Trilogy
Do I need to explain? Work with me, people! I guess I can understand if you've been under a rock and missed Die Hard but I can not accept it if you have to question Dr. Evil's inclusion. I can't even bring myself to bio him because he's so obvious and everpresent. You know, I wouldn't mind having my own little Mini Me running around... I could get 1/8th more stuff done in my day.

Norman Stansfield, The Professional
Special thanks to Al for setting me straight on Gary Oldman's character's name in this film. Says Al, "Best bit in the film 'Do you love life, sweetheart?...And you want to join him.'" My favorite part is where Leon tries to make Mathilda smile by telling her he keeps a pig in the kitchen. Because of the wording of her reply I won't repeat her line but let me just say it's a great dead-pan response. I also appreciated how Leon was unable to say Mathilda's name. Came out "Machilla" every single time. Anway, all this is to say that Gary Oldman has Super Villain insanity down to a science. Need more proof? Go rent Bram Stoker's Dracula (the one with Keanu Reeves. Now there's a good laugh!). Oldman plays so many good bad guys that I simply had to pick one. This one is my favorite.
