Naughty Boys Need Love Too

FAVORITE VILLAIN:
Gendo Ikari, Neon Genesis Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion may be one of the most beautifully poignant and excrutiatingly articulate animated series to have ever come out of Japan. It takes place 15 years following the earth-shattering event called simply the "Second Impact," in which an apocalyptic explosion at the North Pole alters the terran ecology so drastically that nearly half of the human population is wiped out in the aftermath.

It is later revealed that the cause of the explosion was what is termed an"Angel" for mysterious reasons. It seems contact between humans and the Angel caused the world-wide destruction. 15 years later the angels are back, and only a secret organization known as NERV possesses a weapon that can fight back.

Unfortunately only children born on the day of the Second Impact have the ability to pilot the special weapons known as Evangelions, and these special teenagers must sacrifice their lives to protect the earth. Enter Gendo Ikari.

If the post-Second Impact world were worth conquering, Ikari would have done so long ago. As it is, he runs the only part worth running: NERV. He is the mastermind behind NERV, the Human Instrumentality Project, the so-called Marduke Institute, the Evangelions, and the whole stinkin' business of stopping the Angel attacks. But is it is own glory he seeks?

Absolutely calm under pressure, able to sacrifice children at a whim, cold and calculating even with his own son's life, this is a Super Villain who deserves the title as much as anyone else. If Gotham City had survived the Second Impact, Ikari would be tops on Batman'to-do list. He's got those little glasses that give his eyes that eerie glow as he stares down his long nose at those who oppose him. He's got that misleading Amish beard so neatly clipped and in control. He's got those little gloves, and don't all Super Villains have some odd article of clothing they attach their images to? Ikari could make your blood run cold simply by a single utterance.

I'm providing 3 links for the Evangelion fans and the soon-to-be Evangelion fans...because you WILL be sucked in!

Go Ahead, Judge This Book By His Cover

Evil. Dominating. He's got that same lowered-head, straight-on gaze that piccolo has. I would say most of the serious villains have mastered this look. Could you stand up to this man and say, "Sir, I have a suggestion..." and expect to finish your sentence? Not a chance. If you speak, it's only because he lets you.

Oops, Now You've Ticked Him Off
And just check out his uniform. If you're at all familiar with this series, you know he's the only one with this ever-present uniform. Not even the gloves come off. The open jacket and hand in the pocket only imply casual contact. It throws you off; it's arrogant in its implication that he need not be on his guard. He respects the uniform enough to wear it even during extreme labor, but he is also disrespectful enough to be so sloppy aboutit. Acquiescence on his own terms. Cold fellow, don't you think?

You've Got to Love This
He's a man in control of those above him as well as those below. A picture ID with an incomplete facial image? This is nothing more than sticking the point that a picture ID is unnecessary for him. Not to mention he is imaged in his most typical pose. The rules bend for Super Villains, and they doso in a way that always emphasises the villain's absolute power.

Get A Good Look

Some say Ikari is not evil. They say he is a man who struggles with his own demons to achieve an impossible task in spite of the odds. So in what way does that make him ineligible for the title of Super Villain? It doesn't.Super Villains always have reasons and excuses. Even the Joker must have bad childhood memories of his life as Jack Napier. That doesn't make him un-evil. Self-serving, able to sacrifice others, smirking in the face of inflicted pain, ends-justifies-the-means-doctorine-following people are villainous, and Gendo Ikari fits that role like one of his gloves.
